According to a report by The Information, OpenAI and Microsoft are teaming up to create the next big thing in AI. Their out-of-this-world project could mark a turning point for AI advancements. And the price tag is turning heads.

The details:

  • According to sources, the project would involve building a major data center that can house an AI supercomputer

  • The supercomputer has reportedly been dubbed ‘Stargate’ and could launch in 2028

  • Microsoft will likely finance the project, which will cost…(drumroll please)

  • $100 billion dollars

What’s it for? The short answer: To keep up with the demands of AI. The large data center – likely the largest and most expensive in the world – will handle more AI training and tasks than the ones currently available.  And with AI tasks getting more complex by the day, companies need huge computational power and storage capabilities to crunch through mountains of data and churn out intelligent insights.

It’s not the only one: While everyone’s got eyes and ears on Stargate, OpenAI and Microsoft are allegedly building a few supercomputers between now and then. One could launch as early as 2026 – but Stargate is still said to be the biggest.

OpenAI has stayed mum about the project so far, but a Microsoft spokesperson said: "We are always planning for the next generation of infrastructure innovations needed to continue pushing the frontier of AI capability."

AI & AVIATION

The airline industry is getting an AI upgrade

There’s all sorts of factors that can make flying stressful, including delays, security lines, and misbehaving passengers. And people are getting more frustrated by the year: Complaints against the airline industry rose 68% in 2023 alone. Qatar Airlines thinks it’s come up with an unconventional solution — with the world’s “first AI flight attendant.”

Sama 2.0 answers questions and uses human-like expressions to empathize with passengers. And well, if a customer gets angry, at least it's a bot and not a person on the receiving end of their rant. But Qatar Airlines is far from the only company that’s trying to use AI to make flying more seamless.

The industry is also experimenting with LLMs that can:

  • Track baggage, reducing the chance that a piece of luggage will go missing

  • Help TSA agents find potential hazards with more accuracy and speed

  • Predict when plane parts might need to be replaced

  • Help airport staff translate non-native travelers’ questions

  • Predict when a flight might get delayed or canceled

But not everyone’s onboard: Some passengers have raised privacy concerns about airports using biometric scanners and facial recognition technology to identify fliers. Others say AI apps are still buggy and difficult to navigate — causing more trouble than they’re worth at this point.

How about safety? The past few years saw a spike in high-profile runway incidents, and air traffic controllers say they’re struggling to keep up. That’s led some travelers to say, “You won’t find me on an airplane anytime soon.”

AI might one day be able to help by automating certain traffic control processes and giving staff more time to catch close calls before it’s too late. That will require a lot of testing and is probably still a few years off. In the meantime, airline companies are hopeful that AI will streamline our flying experience and free up human staff to take on bigger challenges, even if it can’t cure all of our flying woes just yet.

CHART

What’s pharma’s level of interest in AI?

Source: Maturometer/Across Health

Only 15% of pharmaceutical companies in Europe say they have no interest in using AI for customer engagement purposes.

More than five in 10 say they’re either interested in using AI technology or have already identified key priorities for deploying it. Roughly 30% say they’ve already started implementing AI in their workflow or have begun piloting it in the field.
