What happened

Started by former OpenAI employees and backed by billions in funding from Amazon, Anthropic is one of OpenAI’s most formidable rivals. They’ve just released a new family of AI models called Claude 3, one of which they claim beats OpenAI’s GPT-4.

How good is it really?

Anthropic claims that Claude 3 Opus — the biggest of the new models — beats GPT-4 and other major AI models across all key performance benchmarks (chart below in this email).

Claude 3 is multimodal, which means it can understand text, images, PDFs, and other formats. The model will be able to process more data than GPT-4 — about 150,000 words at a time (200k context window), with larger windows for select users. It also has improved memory recall, surpassing 99% accuracy.

But there’s a catch. While Claude 3 Opus outperforms GPT-4, it still lags behind GPT-4 Turbo, the updated version of GPT-4 that boasts superior performance.

Why it matters

With Claude 3 and Gemini Ultra’s upcoming release, OpenAI’s lead is evaporating quickly. There’s also speculation that models are reaching a plateau in terms of performance and could be in danger of being commodified, with value being captured on apps built on top of these models.

How to access and use Anthropic’s Claude 3

  • Go to the Claude website and sign up.

  • You can enter your prompt in the text box and press enter to get a response.

Here are some things you can try with Claude:

  1. Summarize Files like PDFs, research papers, essays, and more.

  2. Understand Images: Upload an image, like a complicated diagram, and ask Claude to explain it to you.

  3. Understand Complex Calculations: You can upload images of a calculation and ask it to explain what the equations are for and how to use them.

  4. Suggest Design Improvements: Upload an image of a website — or even your living room — and ask how you can improve the design.

  5. Transcribe Handwritten Notes: Upload pictures of handwritten notes and ask Claude to transcribe it for you.

You can access the mid-range Claude 3 Sonnet model for free but the top-end Opus model requires you to subscribe to Claude Pro.

GOVERNANCE & POLICY

Can China keep pace in the AI race after US sanctions?

"He who controls the spice controls the universe," proclaims Frank Herbert in the classic sci-fi novel Dune. Today, GPU chips are the coveted spice of AI, and the US has a near-monopoly on its production. And they’re doing their best to keep it out of China’s hands.

The US restricted exports of advanced GPUs to China late last year, leaving their economic and geopolitical rivals short of the processing power needed to train the AI models necessary for creating apps like ChatGPT.

The restricted supply of GPUs is forcing China to get creative. Reuters reported that China's military and government were able to acquire some Nvidia chips despite the US ban. China is also reportedly offering its AI startups computing ‘vouchers’ to subsidize their costs.

The Chinese government will derive significant encouragement from recent reports that Huawei’s proprietary AI chip could exceed Nvidia’s chips in performance. Nvidia is also reportedly working on new AI chips for the Chinese market that comply with US sanctions.

However, despite some recent progress in overcoming the chip ban, China still has a long road ahead if it wants to stay competitive in AI. Chip production could take years to ramp up to the required levels, and needs to be complemented with networking and fine-tuning platforms — areas that represent their own unique challenges.
